Come Together

John F. Kennedy stated, “One person can make a difference and EVERYONE must try.”

Common sense tells us that when we COME TOGETHER we can galvanize the collective communities around the world to realize their full potential,  From the Patriot Act to the bitter battles in Syria and around the world, when we join forces in Solidarity and in Unity we can stand up for our basic Human Rights, Civil Rights, Peace, Women's Rights and Climate Change. We can form a large global gathering through music, arts, and new media, such as Twitter and YouTube. By utilizing new technologies to enable people to embrace positive changes all over the World at the same time, we can get enormous numbers of people to understand that we all have tremendous power to do great things. By showcasing the hero that lives in all of  us, a brighter tomorrow is possible when we all COME TOGETHER,

Apathy is a problem we must overcome.  We have to get people excited again about regaining their rights, helping them to wake up to their ability to make change; that there is no reason to accept the status quo. Making them realize that we all have tremendous power to do great things when we all  COME TOGETHER…

Millions of people around the world need to join campaigns for a better world, to fight the social injustices pressed upon them by the powerful forces who wish to control and enslave people by reducing their civil and human rights, by manipulating or controlling the media and destroying their privacy and pride. From the Patriot Act to the constant surveillance state we’ve recently confronted in the United States, and much worse around the World, the majority of people do not wish to live in an Orwellian State; they wish to live where they’re not denied an education because of their race or gender, where they are not denied access to information for a better life, where they are not lied to by the media and the bankers that wish to keep people enslaved to debt.  Most of “us” are feeling powerless and afraid, full of anger and rage coupled with the fear that is projected onto them that if they try to make a difference, that they will be taken down, tormented or abused.  But there is something that we can collectively do. We have to make the public mad as hell, so that they won't take it anymore!

The Power of Us begins with U.  And the Future is in our hands.

It is our goal to raise the awareness of the common man to know that he/she has the power to create change for the better. With our desire to learn the truth, we tend to blame the media for letting us down, yet brave journalists are dying at an alarming rate trying to get the news to us. The Daniel Pearl Foundation states that hundreds of journalists have been killed or jailed, all in the line of duty. The truth is under attack all over the world!

We need your help to accomplish our goal. We need you to contribute your important artistry, celebrity and support by getting the word out.
We will present a Grand Concert in Geneva, Switzerland on December 1 called COME TOGETHER in association with the Human Rights Action Center, Shamengo from France, The Malala Foundation from Pakistan, Transcend.org and various organizations and Foundations from around the World who  have signed on early to develop the concert and media campaign/project. We need you to COME TOGETHER with us.

We hope to raise the awareness of the general public all around the world to the simple fact that they have the power to change things for the better - if they COME TOGETHER! The Concert will be an important virtual media event seen by people in over fifty countries and will utilize new media technologies to empower the world with ideas leading to action to enable many of the changes we have desired to see for so long.

"Imagine if the technologies to organize and enable change were available during the 1960’s civil rights movement! If organizing could have been done on the Internet, it is possible that mankind
could have advanced farther..  But apathy is certainly a problem we need to overcome. It is not acceptable that humanity is raping the earth and disabling our bio-diversity; it is not acceptable that 57 million children around the world have never been to school; it is not acceptable that our civil liberties and human rights are being denied; it is not acceptable that our sciences and health are being compromised by corporate greed and manipulation; it is not enough to shout against the injustice done to women across the globe. We have to get people excited again  about making changes, by letting them realize that we all have tremendous power to do great things, and a brighter future can come when we all COME TOGETHER”

We feel that when we COME TOGETHER we can enable millions of people to realize their personal power and human potential and enable a huge global swarm of people to understand what has happened and to take action for a better tomorrow---today. And we need your celebrity to help enable this message. And we need your words and music.

Action is the key.  As global citizens, we must act.  We must build awareness, we must enable education, better health systems, advocate against violence, mutilation and promote our basic human rights. Action, a forward momentum, an effort to make a change.  Little steps by the masses create large ripples that change lives. Please COME TOGETHER with us and help make heroes of millions of people. And change our planet for the better. Call Steve or Herb to discuss what you do to help us succeed on December 1st at the COME TOGETHER event.

Fracking loses

Texas Family Wins $3 Million Judgement Against Fracking Company Over Contamination

FRACKING

A Texas jury has awarded $2.925 million to a family that filed suit after their air and drinking water were contaminated by an oil and gas company, a win attorneys are calling "the first fracking verdict in U.S. history," according to a post on DeSmogBlog.

Plaintiffs Bob and Lisa Parr sued Aruba Petroleum Inc. in 2011 alleging that drilling and fracking at the company's 22 sites, located within a few miles of their home, were making them sick.

"My daughter was experiencing nose bleeds, rashes and there were some mornings she would wake up covered in blood ... screaming and crying," Lisa Parr said during a 2011 press conference.

Environmental deaths are common!

What now happens twice a week to “ordinary people” around the world trying to protect the environment and rights to land? They get killed.

That’s the conclusion of a report released last week by UK-based NGO Global Witness, which states that at least 908 people in 35 countries have been killed since 2002 and the “problem is particularly prevalent in Central and South America.”

According to the report, titled Deadly Environment, the country with the highest number of "Dead Friends of the Earth", as it calls them, is Brazil – a massive 448 – followed by Honduras in second place, the Philippines third, Peru fourth, Colombia fifth and Mexico sixth. It states that rates have increased sharply since 2002, and calls 2012 “the bloodiest year yet.”

The underlying reason for the killings is the “competition for resources [that] is intensifying in a global economy built around soaring consumption and growth”, Deadly Environment argues, noting that “many of those facing threats are ordinary people opposing land grabs, mining operations and the industrial timber trade, often forced from their homes and severely threatened by environmental devastation” – with indigenous communities “particularly hard hit.”

In Brazil, the main reasons are illegal logging followed by cattle ranching and industrial agriculture.

“Driven by the powerful agricultural interests at the heart of Brazil’s export-focused economy, farms push ever deeper into the forest and spawn many conflicts,” the report states.

The majority of the perpetrators remain unknown, according to Global Witness, which describes the situation worldwide as an “endemic culture of impunity” and states that only 10 perpetrators of documented killings from 2002 are known to have been convicted and punished. A rare example is the case of nut-collectors-turned-activists José Cláudio Ribeiro da Silva – or Zé Cláudio, as he was known by many – and his wife Maria do Espírito Santo who were ambushed and shot in Brazil’s Pará state on 24 May 2011: two men have been convicted. Part of the reason for their convictions, the report states, is that this particular case became “high-profile” and “political pressure” was applied.

Three years later, Maria’s sister, Laisa, is continuing to try to protect her land and last year was awarded a Human Rights Defender prize, but she receives death threats for her efforts and has been placed under a federal government protection scheme. Meanwhile, Zé Cláudio’s sister, Claudelice, is preparing to mark the three year anniversary of her brother’s and sister-in-law’s murders. In a letter read aloud at a conference in Washington this month honouring Brazilian rubber-tapper and environmental martyr Chico Mendes, assassinated in 1988, and then again at the Nobel Museum in Sweden to mark the screening of an extremely moving film about Zé Cláudio and Maria, called Toxic: Amazon, members of both families said:

Our forests worldwide are increasingly under threat. Those who defend them are being assassinated. We have already lost some great defenders like our eternal colleague Chico Mendes, [American-born nun] Dorothy Stang [assassinated in 2005], and Zé Cláudio and Maria.

The huge Ocean Sunfish

Molas hatch from tiny eggs but grow to weigh more than a pickup truck, increasing in size 60 million times along the way. That's the equivalent of a 1-gram tadpole turning into a 60-ton frog!

Excellent advice for singer-songwriters

I'm a singer songwriter who is embracing streaming and seeing revenue rise.

I put acoustic performances on YouTube and encourage people to check out the full recording on spotify or iTunes if they still use it.

I'm small enough that people don't put my recordings on YouTube and when they have, I've sent them a polite message asking them to take it down and explain my reasons. They always do it without me having to get google involved. Although I'm partnered and I'd receive royalties from other people's uploads due to content ID match. (I've uploaded all my songs on unlisted videos to make sure this happens).

From my side of it, if people know you're a small business and you have the correct people skills then people respect it and honour your wishes.

I have small numbers on social networks, but they're consistent with each other, and I'm selling about 50% of the number of tickets to my tours as I have on my highest social network. (3100 tickets for my next uk tour of 13 dates in may vs. 6700 twitter followers and YouTube subscribers).

You're so right that trying to get heard in the noise is almost impossible. Old school marketing still is brilliant though. A personal tweet or message to someone on Facebook is more successful than bombarding people with statuses and tweets and it almost guarantees people seeing or responding to you. I'm not talking about spam. I'm talking about engagement. Speaking to the people who have clicked "like"or "follow". Sending them messages asking how they are and what they're up to. And when they respond and ask the same questions of you, you can tell them about your latest project. It's up to them if they really want to then support you.

Yes this is time consuming. But it does make it feasible to make a living from your music at a small level. If I get 2000 people spending £50 on me a year (a few gig tickets, tshirts, CDs/iTunes, other misc merch) and also watch my videos on YouTube and listen on spotify, then there's at least 100000 revenue. Yes there are expenses in that. But as one man with a guitar with a home studio set up, this is more than adequate to make me a living!

The thing that challenges me the most is to find the time to write songs and make content that keeps them interested when I have to do all the business/direct marketing. As you keep saying, an artist needs to be an artist.

I want to take more risks and be a better songwriter but do I have time? I'm not after fame or fortune, I'm after making a living, however humble from the years I've spent learning how to sing, play, perform and write. I'm doing this ok, and I guess as i keep doing it, hopefully more word of mouth things happen so I can stop the direct marketing and free up my time to write more frequently.

Anyway.

Thank you for continuing to challenge me to new ideas of business and art!

Dave Giles.
