In 1971, a Soviet oil rig accidentally drilled into a natural gas
pocket. The earth opened up and swallowed the entire rig and sadly its
crew. To combat the poisonous gas, the community decided to set it on
fire. It's been burning ever since, hence its'name "Gates of Hell."
