BP has a well-oiled Public Relations machine. They are somewhat
effectively dampening the movement to boycott BP gas stations. They
have spokesman and pundits and government officials complaining that
the only people hurt by a boycott is the small businessman who owns
the station. This flies in the face of the purpose and success of a
boycott. Of course, the gas station owner is harmed by the boycott;
that's part of the point. Being connected to BP is painful and the
lack of sales at the pump does effect BP's bottom line and if the
boycott is strong enough they will feel it strongly in their
pocketbook. More important, the pressure it applies on them through
their dealers can cause them a lot more punishment: for example, I
might move my franchise to Shell or Exxon, thereby reducing the number
of outlets BP has, as well as increasing the business of the
competition. A boycott should not be halted because the person you are
boycotting is hurt. That's what a boycott is supposed to do.
